New Town

Cross a bridge over a valley  and walk the spacious and elegant streets of one of the best examples of 18th century European town planning - Edinburgh`s New Town.   The Georgian architecture in golden sandstone, interspersed with green spaces, bears  street names which symbolized a new United Kingdom and became the home of many of Edinburgh`s great institutions.  An area too of literary landmarks, it is also where you will find our National Galleries.

History of Medicine in Edinburgh

The city was a centre of excellence for medical training in the 18th/19th centuries but the origins of the Royal College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh go back much further. For centuries surgeon barbers, physicians and apothecaries practised their trade - not always in harmony or legally. In the midst of all that excellence were slandering surgeons, litigating physicians, flagrant nepotism, bodysnatching and murder with no questions
asked !
